Expanding Advanced Clinical Specialities at SMS Medical College
Developing Dedicated Super-Speciality Services
As patient volumes and clinical complexity increased, the institutional development plan identified several areas for dedicated specialty growth. The proposals focused on creating more specialised clinical pathways, improving multidisciplinary care and strengthening academic development in emerging fields.
Interventional Radiology
A dedicated Interventional Radiology speciality was proposed to build on advanced image-guided procedures already being performed within Radiodiagnosis. The plan highlighted equipment such as ultrasonography, DSA, CT, MRI and radio-frequency ablation systems as part of the technical foundation for the speciality.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine & Perinatology
A separate Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Perinatology division was proposed to strengthen care for high-risk pregnancies and complex maternal-fetal conditions, enabling more focused diagnosis, monitoring and specialised management.

Reproductive Medicine
A dedicated Reproductive Medicine speciality was proposed to strengthen evaluation, counselling and treatment related to fertility and reproductive health, with scope for future academic development.
Critical Care Medicine
With hundreds of ICU beds across the SMS system, the institutional plan proposed Critical Care Medicine as a dedicated speciality to support focused management of critically ill patients and create a pathway for advanced critical-care training.
Andrology
An Andrology division was proposed to provide focused services for male reproductive and sexual-health conditions, including evaluation, counselling, treatment and laboratory-supported care.
